How NHDM Divorce Mediation Works

The NHDM process begins with both participants sharing relevant financial information and any preliminary agreements with each other and the mediator. From there, sessions are organized around the specific matters each couple needs to resolve, including property division, financial responsibilities, parenting schedules, and communication planning. The mediator facilitates every conversation, helping both participants clarify their priorities, consider a range of options, and work through challenges at a manageable pace. The timeline is always set by the participants. Once all terms are agreed upon, the mediator prepares your Marital Settlement Agreement and Custody Stipulation for review and approval. After you sign your Agreements, we will assist you in moving forward with the pro se filing process with the Court so you can obtain your Divorce Decree. All sessions are confidential and available in person or online.

Why Participants in the Lehigh Valley Choose New Hope Divorce Mediation

Participants throughout the Lehigh Valley choose mediation because it is significantly less costly than litigation, both financially and emotionally. A contested divorce can require substantial retainers that must be replenished repeatedly, while mediation involves a set fee covering the entire process. Beyond the financial savings, both participants remain actively in control of every decision, which leads to outcomes that hold up well over time. For families with children, mediation builds the productive communication that effective co-parenting requires going forward. The process moves in months rather than years, and it is completely private throughout. Scheduling is flexible around work and family commitments.

What to Expect from New Hope Divorce Mediation

New Hope Divorce Mediation has extensive experience helping families across the Lehigh Valley reach well-informed agreements, one session at a time.

How can we be productive when we can’t talk to each other?

The presence of a trained divorce attorney-mediator dramatically changes the interpersonal dynamics of the divorcing couple. An experienced attorney-mediator has the skills necessary to foster constructive communication. Through the process, you come to understand that it’s in the best interests of your family to work together to reach an acceptable settlement. Your attorney-mediator facilitates the communication and provides neutral, relevant legal information and experience to assist you with your negotiation and resolution process. Your attorney-mediator will provide information about the legal system, how issues may be viewed by lawyers or judges, and the options and alternatives to help you resolve difficult issues.

Should I also retain a lawyer during mediation?

You are always welcome to retain outside counsel before, during and/or after the divorce mediation process has begun. Neither party may bring an attorney into the mediation sessions, but a well-informed participant is always a good thing. At one point in the divorce mediation process, your attorney-mediator will draft your Marital Settlement Agreement and invite you to have separate lawyers review it before you sign. During your divorce mediation process, your attorney-mediator may provide legal information but is not permitted to provide legal advice or representation.

Do we owe it to our children?

Children benefit enormously when their parents choose a process that minimizes conflict. Mediation keeps both parents involved in crafting agreements around parenting schedules, communication, and child support, which tends to produce outcomes that work better for the whole family. By working cooperatively rather than adversarially, parents protect their children from the stress and disruption that contested litigation often creates.

Do mediators give legal advice?

No, mediators do not give legal advice or represent either participant. They may provide general legal information to help participants understand the context of their decisions, but they will not suggest strategies or recommend what anyone should do. Participants remain fully in control of their choices.
